Local church, YMCA to form partnership to open new daycare center

The YMCA is seeking to operate a new daycare center inside of an existing church on Collierville Road, between Houston Levee and S. Byhalia roads.

A conditional use permit is being sought to allow the YMCA of Memphis and the Mid-South to open a daycare facility on 6.5 acres where Grace Hill Church is located.

The Planning Commission will discuss the matter at its March 5 monthly meeting.

The church was built in 2006 and it includes classrooms, a kitchen and a gymnasium.

The proposed daycare could accommodate 100 children, from 6 weeks old to 5 years old. Summer and holiday camps are already held on the property. The site will be modified to include a fenced playground.

“All families in the Collierville community will have access to excellent childcare services through our fee assistance program,” said Kasandra Berry, executive director of Early Learning for the YMCA. “Grace Hill Church has established connections to the community through outreach programs, facility usage agreements with the area neighborhoods at no cost, and educational partnerships with area schools and educational organizations.

“Combining resources will allow both organizations to further support the community and families in Collierville,” she continued.

The church began a partnership with the YMCA last year and became a “Collierville Outpost” for its holiday and summer camps.

The town’s Planning Commission is scheduled to discuss the rezoning of more than 6 acres for the future Heritage Oaks senior living facility.

The property will be developed into a three-story senior housing complex with 100 units.

The proposed development will generate 344 average daily traffic trips and a peak-hour volume of 39 vehicles.
