Defense helps Dragons avoid Cougar upset | Collierville Independent

Kirby came into last Friday’s game with one win on the season but didn’t play like a single win team. The Cougars gave Collierville a hard fought game but the Dragon’s Drew Van De Vuurst single handedly gave Collierville the offensive boost they needed to win 10-7.

In the first quarter, Kirby scored on a 17-yard touchdown pass play (PAT was good) for a 7-0 lead. Collierville scored on Dillon Scott’s 21-yard field goal in the middle of the second quarter to cut into the lead 7-3 going into halftime.

The Dragons ended the scoring with a 63-yard touchdown pass from Parker Moss to Van De Vuurst (PAT was good) to give the Dragons a lead they wouldn’t give up.

On the scoring play, Van De Vuurst came back to the ball that was thrown short, out jumped the Cougar defender, and out ran the defensive secondary to score the game winning touchdown.

Collierville’s defense held Kirby to 182 yards total offense for the game with good play from seniors Austin Hall, Cameron Doyle, Carson White, Mitchell Jensen, Isiah Kieren and Korderic Taylor. Hall grabbed an interception in the fourth quarter to seal the win.

When asked about team play, Coach O’Neill stated, “As well as we played on defense, we’re struggling on offense. We’re still trying to find our identity at quarterback. Van De Vuurst had a huge play for us, refused to go down and got in the end zone.

“In all my years of coaching defense,” he continued, “this is the single best performance I’ve ever witnessed in my life. These guys played with heart and they don’t give up. I couldn’t be more proud of the defense.”

Collierville will host district rival Ridgeway (5-1) at 7 p.m. on Friday. The Roadrunners’ lone loss was to Whitehaven.
