The Memphis University School physics team earned first place in a nine-state region in the American Association of Physics Teachers Physics Bowl Division 02 contest, and junior Richard Ouyang of Collierville tied for the top individual score (26) in the region. Ouyang’s mark on the April online test added to the scores of senior William Lamb (25), junior Yunhua Zhao (25), senior Garret Sullivan (24) and senior Salman Haque (20) put MUS at the top of the region. Wayne Mullins, instructor in physics, said seniors Matthew Gayoso, Nick Schwartz and Zain Virk also performed well on the test. “I am so proud of the whole class. Our scores were uniform,” he said. “The scores of Nick, Matthew, or Zain would have enabled us to still top the second highest score in our region, Farragut [Tenn.] High School.” There are two levels of competition in the AAPT PhysicsBowl: Division 01 is for first-year students, and Division 02 is for second-year students. The test is administered to students in the United States, Canada, China and Spain.
