A group of Collierville residents recently made the community more prepared in the event of a mass disaster.

Although the Collierville Fire and Police Departments continuously prepare and train for everyday emergencies, as well as disaster scenarios, a mass disaster could overwhelm conventional emergency services. The Community Emergency Response Team Program is a realistic, proactive approach to situations where citizens may be on their own to respond to lifethreatening needs.

From June 12-14, 10 participants received hands-on training from Scott Sumner, assistant chief of Fire Prevention, and Paul Witt, fire inspector. The CERT course follows a Federal Emergency Management Agency nationally prepared format.

Offered for free to those who live or work in Collierville, training includes basic disaster response skills such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations.

The Collierville Fire Department plans to host another CERT course at the beginning of 2016.
