Collierville remembers Nikki McCray-Penson

Town of Collierville

Family, friends, and basketball fans gathered together Saturday at Collierville High School to remember the remarkable life of Nikki McCray-Penson.

Mayor Stan Joyner (pictured below) proclaimed July 22, 2023, as Nikki McCray-Penson Day, “to honor the legacy of Nikki McCray-Penson and celebrate her life of compassion, perseverance, and excellence as we strive to build a stronger, more united community together.”

In addition to the Mayor, numerous community leaders participated in the memorial including family, clergy, elected officials, Dragon alumni, and professional colleagues. Anfernee “Penny” Hardaway, the men’s University of Memphis basketball head coach, even shared a video message about his friend, Nikki.

Collierville School Board members Wright Cox and Paul Childers (pictured below) made the announcement that the court in the Collierville High School fieldhouse would be named “Nikki
McCray Court” in her honor. The Collierville School Board passed this resolution to name the court after the basketball star at their July 18th Board meeting.

The announcement of the court was met with cheers, as Nikki was one of the most talented athletes to graduate from Collierville High School.

Following the memorial service, attendees went outside for a dove release and had an afternoon of food and fellowship in the school cafeteria.
