Board to review road safety projects | Collierville Independent

The Collierville Board of Mayor and Aldermen will review a contract Monday night for safety projects on Shelton Road.

The proposed projects are estimated to cost between $213,798 and $287,838 and are intended to improve pedestrian safety at two points along the road.

The first project would include the construction of a 260-foot long median between Sugar Lane and Peterson Lake Road to provide a “safe refuge island” for pedestrians.

Currently pedestrians must cross 90-feet of pavement to access the town’s Greenbelt trail.

“This expanse of asphalt is too great for the average pedestrian,” said Dale Perryman, town engineer.

The second project includes an 80-foot pedestrian bridge east of Peterson Lake Road.

Bids were taken for wooden and steel bridges.

Board members will also vote to accept an Enhancement Grant from the Tennessee Department of Transportation for the Collierville Center Connect project.

On June 26, TDOT announced it would award the town a $756,846 Enhancement Grant for Phase 1 improvements to Center Street. The project, named Collierville Center Connect, will upgrade Center Street in six phases over several years and requires a 20 percent local match.

Phase 1 will cover Center Street from the intersection of South Rowlett to the intersection of South Street. The main emphasis of this phase is the separation of pedestrians from parking and vehicle movements and better design and shared marking for bike facilities.

The grant, along with future phases, is intended to improve transportation options, provide an attractive gateway to the Town Square from Highways 385 and 72, increase tourism and enhance economic development opportunities for the area.
