Mark Hansen, chairman of the Collierville Schools Board of Education, has informed Superintendent Dr. Gary Lilly that he does not intend to stand for re-election in November 2020.
Hansen’s “retirement” at the completion of his current term thus ends his elected service, which began when our schools first opened their doors in August 2014.
Hansen has led the Board of Education as its Chairman since that time.
He indicated his belief that the school system is one of the best in Tennessee and has all the pieces in place to continue to improve in the future.
He also noted that his school board service was a “labor of love” and the highlight of a long history of public service in Collierville.
“Chairman Hansen has provided rock solid leadership to Collierville Schools,” said Superintendent Gary Lilly.
“He makes every decision based on what’s best for students and the community,” continued Lilly. “We appreciate his dedicated service, commitment, and leadership as Board Chair and for all that he has done to advance the educational opportunities for our community’s children.”
Hansen and his wife, Sara, are residents of Collierville since 1992.
They have two adult daughters (Mary Emily and Ann Caroline) and a son (Gray), all of whom attended Collierville public schools.
Hansen retired from FedEx Express in 2019, having served as Lead Counsel for Regulatory Affairs.
As a nationally known aviation attorney, he has spoken at aviation conferences in the U.S. and internationally.
Hansen is a member of the Air and Space Forum of the American Bar Association, and the International Air & Transportation Safety Bar Association.
He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in History and a Master of Arts degree in Political Science from East Tennessee State University, where he served as President of the Student Government Association.
Hansen has a Doctor of Jurisprudence Degree from the University of Tennessee, and has practiced law in Tennessee since 1980.
Hansen has a history of service to the community.
Hansen is a graduate of Leadership Collierville and has served on its Board of Directors.
Additionally, he has served the Town as a member of the Collierville Planning Commission, the Board of Zoning Appeals and the Steering Committee of the 2040 Strategic Land Use Plan.
On behalf of the entire Collierville Schools family, thank you, Chairman Hansen for the many years of service, dedication, and leadership to Collierville Schools students, families, and staff.
In no small degree from your vision, and steadfast commitment to the children and families of the town, your legacy at Collierville Schools will provide students with impactful opportunities to develop scholarship, integrity, and service for generations to come.
