Mayor addresses public safety concerns | Collierville Independent

By Mayor Stan Joyner

Over the past couple of days I have been reading comments on social media raising concerns about public safety in Collierville.

Although I do not routinely post comments on social media I wanted to take this opportunity to express my concern as well. This recent spree of crime over the weekend of Jan. 19-22 concerns me.

Early Monday morning I called a meeting with our police command staff and the Town Administrator to discuss what needs to be done to make our patrols more effective.

Immediately following the meeting I addressed the media in an effort to communicate my concerns while also putting the criminals on notice that crime will not be tolerated in Collierville. I have full faith that the men and women of the Collierville Police Department are doing all they can to protect our community and will apprehend these criminals.

I want to assure the residents of Collierville that the Collierville Board fully supports the Collierville Police Department. Public safety has been a Town budget priority for many consecutive years and as long as I am Mayor it will continue to be a priority.

On January 10 of this year I spoke to the Collierville Chamber of Commerce general membership and the two strategic areas I focused on in my message were public safety and schools. Right now the Collierville Board is developing the 2018-19 budget.

Funding the Collierville Police Department with the resources they need to provide the patrols and enforcement required to keep our community safe will be our priority. This includes adding officers, equipment, technology and training.

I have consistently voted in favor in providing resources for public safety and will continue to vote for funding our Police Department with the resources that positions them to provide the best levels of protection possible.
