Ellen Moore Gammon

1943 – 2023

Ellen Moore Gammon, 80, of Trezevant Manor, Memphis TN, died Tuesday, July 18, 2023 at Baptist Reynolds Hospice House in Collierville, TN. Her sense of humor, quiet courage and deep faith during her final illness was an inspiration to all who knew her. She was a life-long Methodist and formerly served on the Board of Collierville United Methodist Church.

She leaves her beloved daughter, Myra Gammon McHugh (Steve); two grand-children, Stephen McHugh, Jr. and Margaret McHugh; two sisters, Susan Moore Bonds (Bobby) and Lyla Moore McAlexander (Doug); one brother, D. Rook Moore III (Marie); six nieces, Marie Holder (Ryan), Amery Moore, Susanna Moldoveanu (Tudor), Georgia Baker (Dave), Maggie Vinzant, and Stephanie Vinzant; two nephews, Battle Ewing (Codee) and Robert “Bo” Bonds (Jennifer); eleven great-nieces and nephews; and a host of cousins, all of whom she dearly loved.

Ellen was preceded in death by her parents, the late Dudley R. Moore, Jr., Myra Burrow Moore, and Frances Newsom Moore; her grandparents, Dr. and Mrs. Dudley R. Moore, Sr. and Mr. and Mrs. Tom Burrow; her nephew, Dudley Rook Moore IV, and her former husband, Thomas Irwin Gammon.

Ellen grew up in Byhalia, Mississippi, graduated from Byhalia High School, and attended Mississippi State College for Women, “The W”, where she was a member of the Silhouette Social Club and First Alto in the Glee Club. As a teenager she served as a Living Ad for Les Passes in Memphis and went on to do volunteer work for Les Passes as an adult.

Ellen loved children, they loved her, and she retired from Shelby County Schools where she worked with special needs children for over 25 years. She was an avid bridge player, pianist, and gardener, specializing in rooting gardenia plants as gifts for family and friends. She loved making a Grand Slam at bridge! In 2022, she earned her 20 year membership service award from the Daughters of the American Revolution.

Services in memory of Ellen Moore Gammon were held on Saturday, July 22, 2023 at Collierville Methodist Sanctuary on the Square, 104 N. Rowlett Street, Collierville TN, with the memorial service at 11 A.M., and the interment followed at Byhalia Cemetery in Byhalia, MS.

The family requests that any contributions in memory of Ellen be made to the Trezevant Foundation, 177 North Highland Street, Memphis, TN 38111 or the Dudley Rook Moore IV Memorial Scholarship fund at the University Foundation, University of Mississippi, 406 University Ave, Oxford, MS 38655.
