Collierville’s vacant alderman position will be included on Nov. 3 ballot

The Collierville Board of Mayor and Aldermen began with a solemn moment on Monday night as Alderman John Worley was asked to give an invocation to open the meeting.

Worley expressed his sympathy for the family of former Alderman Tom Allen, who passed away on July 21, and spoke of Allen’s impact on Collierville. Allen, 84, was diagnosed with Stage IV pancreatic cancer earlier this summer and recently announced his resignation as Pos. 4 Alderman.

“This is the first meeting we’ve had without Alderman Allen since he passed away,” Worley said. “He was such an asset to the town, serving the community for over 14 years.

“He will be missed by all in the Town of Collierville,” he added.

Board members went on to adopt a motion to officially declare a vacancy to Alderman Pos. 4.

Town Administrator James Lewellen said a motion was necessary so that the opening could be added to the ballot for the Nov. 3 election.

The Shelby County Election Commission was notified on July 28 and will allow candidates to pull a petition to qualify for the position.

“On July 6,” said Lewellen, “Alderman Allen called me to his home and asked me about this process. That is part of the reason he resigned. So that this could be placed on the ballot.”

The town’s Charter states that a motion must be made to declare that a vacancy exists.

It also states that the Board can appoint a person to fill the vacancy until the next election.

The deadline to qualify for the election is Aug. 20 at noon.
