The Collierville Chamber of Commerce has stepped up and issued a challenge to the community to provide Town of Collierville employees with handmade, washable face masks.
The town recently received a donation of medical style masks, but those were distributed to Fire and Police personnel who have daily face to face contact with the public.
Town Administrator James Lewellen expressed the desire that all such medical grade masks go to those medical staff on the front lines fighting the virus or Town staff dealing with the public.
So that left inner office Town employees still in need of masks.
When the Chamber staff learned that the Town needed around 400 non-medical style, washable face masks, they came up with the idea of harnessing local sewing talent in support of Town employees.
They provided potential mask makers with a link to the appropriate guidelines for creating the masks (https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/prevent-getting-sick/diy-cloth-face-coverings.html ) and encouraged them to get creative by using fabric with logos of local teams and schools.
The Chamber staff will be collecting the masks over the next week and a half, and delivering them to the Town’s offices on May 11.
