Jan. 2

Adults and teens are invited to a tea party at the Germantown Community Library at 2 p.m. on Jan. 2 in honor of the premiere of Downton Abbey’s Season 6.

Enjoy tea and finger foods as and catch up with the latest twists with an audience-participation skit recapping Season 5’s last episode, trivia, and more.

Period costumes are encouraged for the costume runway, but not required.

Jan. 4

In preparation for the Feb. 6 ACT test, the Germantown Parks and Recreation Department will host a series of sessions devoted to strategies and test-taking tips where students will gain the confidence and skills needed to succeed on exam day. Practice tests will also be taken.

Prior to the class, students are required to purchase The Real ACT Prep Guide. The class meets Mondays, from Jan. 4 to Feb. 1 (no class Jan. 18), from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

Jan. 6

The Morton Museum of Collierville History will host an English Afternoon Tea and Lecture on Jan. 6 at noon.

The event will be catered by Rosebriar Dining. Participants are encouraged to bring their favorite tea cup, saucer and spoon. Following the tea, Dominique Bellott will discuss The Sun King’s Gardens: 17th Century French Formal Gardens.

The Morton Museum of Collierville History will open its Slaves and Slaveholders of Wessyngton Plantation exhibit on Jan. 8.

Learn about the history of Tennessee’s Wessyngton Plantation. This special exhibit is on loan from the Tennessee State Museum will be on view until March 4.

Jan. 9

Ave Maria Home, Delta Wholesale Liquors and local artists will present Ave Maria Home’s annual Wine Tasting and Art Show on Jan. 9 from 6 – 9 pm. in the home’s Assisi Adult Day Center at 2805 Charles Bryan Road. That evening, Bill Lucchesi from Delta Wholesale Liquors will offer a tasting of selected wines. An art show will feature works for sale by

Shelby County Republican Women’s Club will hold its first General meeting of the new year on Jan. 19 at 11 a.m. at Germantown Country Club. The event will feature guest speaker John Ryder, general counsel for the Republican National Committee.

Jan. 30

Looking for a new design or approach to your home landscape and gardening efforts? Join the environmental and native plant professionals from Strawberry Plains Audubon Center at the Pickering Center as they present a more efficient and responsible way to build and manage your yard.

Gleaning from a diverse palette of native plants, students will be able to create a whole new landscape or enhance an existing one.

Learn the basic requirements of birds, butterflies and other pollinators, as well as best plant location for all-year garden interest. The first session on Jan. 30 is an engaging lecture followed by a hands-on design lab for the second session Feb. 6, 9 a.m. to noon.

The fee includes both sessions, continental breakfast and resource materials. Pre-registration is required. The workshops are held at 7771 Poplar Pike and presented by the Germantown Beautification Commission and Tree Board.
