Town of Collierville
At the end of October, a group of town employees began working daily to string lights on Collierville Town Square and in preparation for Christmas in Collierville.
They are the town’s own Santa’s elves who officially work in the Streets and Drainage Division of Collierville Public Services.
Stringing lights is only part of the Christmas in Collierville tasks that the Streets and Drainage Crews take on every year.
They also spend time in their workshop creating new ways to enhance the holiday décor.
This year they added features behind the Depot including lighted spheres to trees and a giant present.
The new section is called “The Avenue of Lights” where a walkway takes you through the present along the magical path next to the trees.
The crew is always looking for something new that will stand out from previous years, but nothing stands out quite as much as the 30-foot Cedar Tree that is adorned with 6,000 lights.
They even bring out their lift trucks to decorate every foot with multicolored lights and the large red and gold ornaments. No matter how high or low, the crews will make sure the Square is covered with white lights, green garland, or red bows.
“The guys up here working do a great job. They put a lot of time and effort into it, they take a lot of pride in it, and they really enjoy doing it,” said Clay Ticer, Streets and Drainage Assistant Manager.
Holiday displays are just part of this group’s service to the community. Crews are responsible for street maintenance (repairs and overlay), street sweeping, drainage maintenance, street signage, litter collection, and emergency response during severe weather events.
This crew is busy the entire year making sure Collierville is a great place to be, but during the holiday season, their work really shines.
