Board OKs location, size of off-leash area | Collierville Independent

The portion of the map marked A is the site chosen for the new off-leash dog area at WC Johnson Park.

The Collierville Board of Mayor and Aldermen has approved the location and size of an off-leash area at WC Johnson Park.

Board members voted 4-2 Monday night to create a 1.35-acre leashless area for dogs close to the children’s spray park.

Aldermen Billy Patton and Tom Allen voted against the proposed location, each noting that its proximity to the park’s lake would create contamination and disrupt fishers.

Until recently, the focus of the off-leash area centered around a 7-acre site west of the baseball complex and north of the man-made lakes along the west property line of the park. In May, Board members approved the location.

However, Board members rejected a proposed Memorandum of Understanding for the off-leash area.

In August, the Board rescinded their previous actions and told town staff to begin planning for a new off-leash area with public input.

An Off-Leash Committee was formed and an open house was held to view three proposed locations.

The 1.35-acre area received the most votes by those who attended the open house. The original 7-acre area received the second most votes.

Components of the area include signage, shade awnings, pet waste stations and water stations.

The project is expected to cost $44,000.
