Houston High School senior guard Destinee Wells has been nominated to play in the 2020 McDonald’s All-American Girls Game at the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas.
On Tuesday, McDonald’s unveiled that six local Memphis area high school stars were among the top basketball talent nominated to take part in the prestigious games. The list of more than 900 top girls and boys high school seniors from across the country recognizes six players from the Memphis area – five male and one female players.
Alumni of the nation’s premier high school basketball all-star event include Michael Jordan, LeBron James, James Harden, Maya Moore and Candace Parker. This year’s list of talent includes players from 48 states and the District of Columbia who have been selected by high school coaches, athletic directors, principals and members of the McDonald’s All American Games Selection Committee.
A complete list of 2020 McDonald’s All American Games Nominees is available at mcdaag.com. The final rosters of the top 24 girls and 24 boys for the 2020 McDonald’s All American Games will be revealed on Jan. 23 at 4 p.m. on ESPN’s The Jump and also covered at 7 p.m. on ESPN’s SportsCenter.
“The 2020 class of nominees have demonstrated their talent and hard work both on and off the basketball court,” said Memphis area McDonald’s Owner/Operator Michael Retzer Jr. “We take pride in their talent being recognized and are thrilled to have them representing us from Memphis as nominees for the 2020 McDonald’s All American Games.”
Wells, who recently signed a Letter of Intent to attend Belmont this fall, is a four-star guard who is ranked No. 86 in the country, according to ESPN.
Wells received USA Today Second Team Tennessee this year. She plays under head coach Ben Moore and appeared in the 2019 state championship.
The daughter of Larry Wells has varied interest in criminal justice, psychology, chemistry and sports administration.
“Destinee will bring a vital playmaking ability to our team that we probably have not seen since I have been here,” said Belmont Head Coach Bart Brooks. “She is one of the most exciting players to watch in the state of Tennessee. She will make a great impact on our program.”
The 19th annual McDonald’s All American Girls Game will tip off on ESPN2 at 6 p.m. on April 1. The 43rd annual Boys Game immediately follows at 7 p.m. on ESPN.
The local male players nominated for the 2020 Games are:
