Local man sworn in as president of Home Builder Association

John Catmur was sworn in on Nov. 22, as the 74th president of the West TN Home Builders Association.

Over 220 builders, remodelers, developers and supporters of the building industry welcomed Catmur during an inauguration gala celebration held at Cedar Hall in Bartlett.

Catmur’s wife, Mary Gaston Catmur, attached the President’s pin to his lapel, and a host of past presidents lined up to pass him a giant, ceremonial gavel.

Stepping down from office was 2019 President, Dave Tucker, owner of D & D Custom Homes in Brighton.

Tucker encouraged Catmur to continue moving the organization forward.

“A single twig can be easily broken,” said Tucker, “but tie a hundred twigs together into a bundle, and you have created strength through numbers. Working together, we have the power to change lives and build a better, stronger America. That is the challenge I pass to you, John. To continue to strengthen this great organization so we may continue to be the voice of the building industry in West Tennessee.”

The ceremony also included a speech by the 2020 Tennessee Home Builders Association (HBAT) President, Ethan Collier.

Collier spoke about his vision for 2020 and encouraged all HBAs in Tennessee to unite in their efforts to reduce the regulatory barriers that increase the cost of building a home and put home buying out of reach for too many families in Tennessee.

In addition to remarks, the celebration also included the presentation of the following award

  • 2019 VESTA Home Show People’s Choice Award Winners
    • 1st Place – Kelmscott Manor by Dave Moore Companies
    • 2nd Place – The Hudson House by Johnny Williams Construction
    • 3rd Place – E. Anne Manor by Steve Orians Construction
  • 2019 President’s Awards
    • Sam Davidson
    • Don Glays
    • Keith Grant
    • Seth Billings, Jr.
  • 2019 Spike of the Year, presented to Dave Tucker
  • 2019 Associate of the Year, presented to Alan Hargett
  • 2019 Builder of the Year, presented to Dave Moore

Guests were treated to dinner and entertainment by the Beale Street Jazz Band, featuring longtime real estate professional, Dan Wilkinson, on banjo. Kanette Keough, the new Executive Director of the West TN Home Builders Association, declared the evening a great success.

“It was great to see our award recipients recognized publicly for all their hard work,” said Keough. “Not only are our winners among the elite in the home building industry, but they’re also passionate about building and remodeling communities where families can grow and flourish. I’m thrilled to be working with them, and I’m excited to help John Catmur move the organization forward in 2020.”

2020 marks the 75th Anniversary of the West TN Home Builders Association. According to Keough, plans for a celebration are underway for some time in the Spring.
