Eron “Red Dog” Harris

1930 – 2022

Eron “Red Dog” Harris, 91, of Rossville, Tennessee passed away on Sunday, February 13, 2022. 

Red Dog was born August 1, 1930 in Cotton Springs, MS to the late James Garfield & Lou Eda Clay Harris.  He graduated from Belmont High School in 1949, as “Mr. Belmont High”.   

Red Dog served in the Korean Conflict in the United States Air Force.  Returning to the U.S. he worked his career for the United States Postal Service retiring from the Regional Office in 1988.  Once bored with retirement and looking for a employee discount for fishing equipment he “worked” for Bass Pro Shop as the first person hired in the fishing department at the Macon Road store.  A lifelong fisherman he helped organize and was a charter member of the Memphis Bass Club. He also was a season ticket holder for Ole Miss Football for over 50 years.  

Red Dog & Jo Ann were members of Central Church in Collierville.

Along with his parents Mr. Harris was preceded in death by his daughter Sherrye Harris Clark; and fourteen brothers and sisters.

Red Dog is survived by his wife of 67 years Jo Ann Black Harris; grandchildren Erin (Katie), Meredith, and Tyler (Caitlin) Wadlington; two great-grandchildren Cora & Harris Wadlington; son-in-law Mike Clark; and several nieces and nephews.

Family and friends will gather for visitation on Wednesday, February 16, 2022 from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Memphis Funeral Home, 5599 Poplar Avenue, Memphis, TN  38119.  Funeral services will be Thursday, February 17, beginning at 10:00 AM at Central Church, 2005 E. Winchester Road, Collierville, TN 38017. A private family burial will follow.

Memorials in Red Dog’s honor should be sent to Central Church or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
