Board votes to amend charter | Collierville Independent

The Collierville Board of Mayor and Aldermen amended the town’s charter Tuesday night, giving the board power to set the salaries of future elected officials.

Earlier this year, the board approved a resolution to ask the Tennessee General Assembly to amend the charter.

Board members ratified and approved Tennessee General Assembly Private Chapter Number 46, House Bill No. 2514 of the Private Acts of 2014.

According to the current charter, the salaries of the town’s mayor, vice-mayor and aldermen can only be changed by a Private Act of the General Assembly.

The General Assembly approved the Charter Amendment on April 3. Gov. Bill Haslam signed it weeks later.

If the amendment is not signed by the town’s Board of Mayor and Aldermen within 60 days of its passage it will not go into effect.

The amendment will not affect the salaries of existing officials. The salaries of incumbents cannot be altered prior to the end of the term for which each official was elected.

• The board also established the municipal property tax rate for the 2015 fiscal year at $1.53 per $100 of assessed value.

• Board members approved certificates of compliance for Cheers Wines & Spirits at 366 New Byhalia Road and Poplar Wines & Spirits at 2136 W. Poplar Ave., Suite 111.

In order to secure the appropriate license from the state, businesses must obtain a certificate of compliance from the town. The Collierville Police Department completed background checks on both applicants.
