Worley, Marshall win aldermen seats in runoff election

While most of the Mid-South finished with voting in November, Dec. 8 was Election Day for voters in Collierville.
Two hotly contested seats on the town’s Board of Mayor and Aldermen were filled last week after the results from a runoff election were tallied. Incumbent Pos. 3 Alderman John Worley was re-elected and newcomer Missy Marshall was chosen to represent Pos. 4.
A runoff election was required by the Town Charter since none of the candidates running for Pos. 3 and Pos. 4 Aldermen earned 50 percent of the votes in the November election.
The Pos. 3 race saw Worley, who received 45 percent of the votes in November, go against Harold Booker (43 percent).
Worley got 10,907 votes in the municipal election, with Booker trailing by 651 votes. Thomas Swan also ran in the race for Pos. 3 and garnered 2,825 votes.
In the December election, Worley received 3,438 votes, or 59 percent.
With six challengers, the race for Pos. 4 Alderman was the most crowded of all the municipal elections in Shelby County.
The top two candidates were Marshall, who received 31 percent of the votes, and William Boone (27 percent).
Marshall’s votes were tallied at 7,589, while Boone secured 6,520 votes.
The next closest candidate was Rick Rout with 4,060 votes.
In the runoff election, Marshall secured 3,800 votes, or 65 percent.
Turnout for early voting was strong, according to Linda Phillips, administrator of elections for the Shelby County Election Commission.
A builder by trade, Worley, who will be serving his third term, recently said that public safety is the biggest concern facing the community.
“All our citizens want to be and feel safe. The citizens want our police and fire departments to be fully staffed and with appropriate equipment.”
Marshall, the executive director for Keep Tennessee Beautiful, said “growing and developing future leaders is something I see as a major concern facing our community.”
“The downfall of countries, nations, states and local communities is a result of the lack of strong and quality leadership.”
