Houston handled by Germantown
The Houston High School varsity football team fell to Germantown High School Friday night after allowing the Red Devil’s offense to gain nearly 250 yards on the ground.

The Mustangs suffered their second loss of the season 20-10 at the hands of a surging Germantown squad that has won its last five games.
The Red Devils scored in the first quarter on a 12-yard dash from senior running back Justin Roberson. He finished the game with 64 yards on only five carries.
The Mustangs got on the scoreboard in the second quarter on an 18-yard run from junior quarterback Walker Lamberth, who finished the contest with 61 passing yards.
With the game tied at halftime, the Mustangs took the lead in the third quarter on a 44-yard field goal courtesy of C.J. Stafford.
However, Germantown answered back with a red-zone touchdown run from senior running back Damon Cox.
The Red Devils scored again on a 16-yard pass from quarterback Samuel Martin to Caylon Weathers, making the game out of reach from the visiting Mustangs.
Houston (6-2) will host 5-3 Southwind Friday night. Germantown will host Ridgeway.
Dragons win second straight
The Collierville High School varsity football team achieved its first win streak Friday after beating a winless Kirby team 38-30.
The win comes on the heals of a 49-19 drubbing of Overton on Oct. 5 in which Dragon quarterback Clay Casey ran for nearly 150 yards.
Against Kirby, Casey displayed what he can do with his arm. The junior threw for 224 yards and four touchdowns.
“Our players are starting to understand the zone read system that we have installed on offense,” said Head Coach Michael O’Neill.
The Dragon defense also came up big in a game that saw four interceptions.
“This defense is young but is improving and plays hard,” O’Neill said.
Collierville scored first in the game on a 21-yard pass from Casey to Hastin Witt, who finished the game with five catches and 80 yards.
After a second-quarter touchdown from Kirby, the Dragons struck again on another touchdown pass from Casey. This time, sophomore super-athlete Drew Van de Vuurst was the recipient.
Both teams exchanged touchdowns for the remainder of the game with Kirby never gaining enough momentum to catch the clicking Collierville offense.
“The bottom line is that our guys are playing hard and showing improvement as of late,” O’Neill said. “I expect the improvement to continue. That’s the plan.”
The Dragons (4-4) will host 2-6 Wooddale High School Friday night at 7 p.m. before traveling to 5-3 Ridgeway High School on Oct. 26.
