Tragic Moment: Child’s self-inflicted gunshot outside of shopping center leads to his passing

Over the weekend, a 3-year-old child was rushed to the hospital in critical condition after an accidental shooting in a car outside of a shopping center in Collierville.

Monday morning the Collierville Police Department reported the child succumbed from the injuries from Saturday’s incident.

According to CPD, around 4:08 p.m. Saturday, officers responded to a possible gunshot injury call in the area of Harbor Freight. The early portion of the investigation determined a 3-year-old located a gun inside a vehicle and accidentally shot himself.

Around 9 a.m. Monday, the CPD released a statement via Facebook about the passing of the boy.

“It’s with great sadness that we must announce that the child involved in the shooting incident outside of Harbor Freight on Saturday succumbed to his injuries,” the post read. “Our deepest condolences are extended to his family. This is still an ongoing investigation.”

The scene of the incident was at Harbor Freight located at 712 W. Poplar Avenue. Based on the initial investigation, the 3-year-old was able to locate a firearm inside a vehicle and accidentally shot himself. The vehicle was occupied by family members at the time of the incident. 

The child was transported to Le Bonheur Hospital in Downtown Memphis in critical condition.

This is an ongoing investigation and no additional information can be provided at press time.
