Town’s jobless rate up, yet remains among lowest in state

Collierville and Germantown have tied for the third lowest jobless rate during the month of October.

The rate for both municipalities was up at 4.7 percent but remained lower than nearly every other city in the state with a population of 25,000 or more.

Collierville reported 1,213 unemployed residents in October out a workforce of nearly 26,000 individuals. Germantown reported 930 jobless residents during the same period out a 19,745-man labor force.

Collierville and Germantown’s rate were 3.5 and 3.6 percent in September, respectively.

At 13.1 percent, Memphis has the highest rate among the state’s municipalities.

Brentwood and Franklin have the lowest rates at 4.6 and 4.5 percent, respectively.

Neighbors to the north, Bartlett has a 5.5 percent jobless rate and a labor force of 31,161.

Many Tennessee counties experienced changes in their unemployment rates during October, according to newly released data from the Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development.

Unemployment in 93 of Tennessee’s 95 counties increased in October. Davidson and Sevier counties saw their rates decrease during the month.

During October, two counties in the state had unemployment rates below 5 percent, 90 counties had rates of 5 percent or greater, and three counties recorded rates of 10 percent or higher.

Shelby County recorded October’s highest jobless rate in Tennessee. At 11 percent, the county’s unemployment increased by seven tenths of a percentage point when compared to the previous month’s revised rate of 10.3 percent.

Williamson County had the state’s lowest unemployment in October with a rate of 4.6 percent, which is up eight tenths of a percentage point from its revised September rate of 3.8 percent.

The state of Tennessee will release the unemployment rate for November on Dec. 17.
Tennessee’s overall rate for October was 7.4 percent.

Nationally, unemployment decreased from September’s revised rate of 7.9 percent to 6.9 percent in October. The U.S. rate is 3.3 percentage points higher than it was in October 2019.
