Stamps a unanimous choice for vacant alderman position

By Graham Sweeney

A lifelong Collierville resident has been called on to serve on the town’s Board of Mayor and Aldermen.
Board members unanimously voted on Monday night to appoint Taylor Stamps to the previously vacant position of Alderman 4.
A vacancy was declared by the board last month after former Alderman Tom Allen passed away on July 21.
Stamps will fill the position until a successor is elected in the Nov. 3 election.
Town Administrator James Lewellen noted that the Board held a work session on Aug. 20 to discuss a “long list of names of outstanding and very qualified people.”
“We certainly did have a lot of good, quality people who volunteered to serve and donate their time to the town,” said Mayor Stan Joyner.
Stamps was the only candidate nominated.
“This is a temporary position and an honorary position that is going to be for the next few months,” Alderman John Stamps said before making the nomination, which was seconded by Vice Mayor Maureen Fraser.
Born in Collierville in 1936, Stamps is past recipient of the H.R. Houston Award from Leadership Collierville. He was named the Collierville Chamber of Commerce Person of the Year and served as the Grand Marshal of the 2014 Collierville Christmas Parade.
He continues to serve Main Street Collierville and the town’s Heritage Commission He has also participated in several mission trips.
A past president of The Citizens Bank, he previously owned and operated Stamps Motor Company and is one of the founding members of Collierville’s legendary “Coffee Club.”
Stamps is known for his “commitment to community service and keen interest in Collierville heritage.”
He was scheduled to be sworn into office on Tuesday night.
Allen was diagnosed with Stage IV pancreatic cancer earlier this summer and announced his plans to resign from post as Pos. 4 Alderman. Allen was 84 years old and served the town for 14 years.
Justin Mitchell served as Pos. 4 Aldermen before Allen was elected.
