It’s almost time for Town Square to turn spooky with Scare on the Square. This year’s date is Friday, October 20, from 4 to 7 p.m., and here’s what you and your kids can look forward to: trick or treating with merchants, trunk or treating, games and crafts, balloon artists, food trucks, temporary tattoo artists and magical music to dance to from DJ Derick.

Scare on the Square is an annual fundraiser put on by a partnership between the Collierville Junior Auxiliary, Main Street Collierville, and the Town of Collierville. There are opportunities for businesses to sponsor all the fun listed above by visiting the Auxiliary website and filling out the sponsorship form. All proceeds go to fund Junior Auxiliary programs benefitting our community’s children.

Did you know that Collierville’s Junior Auxiliary started out as the “Women in Collierville Community Service Club” (“WICCS)? That was in 1991, and the initial membership was made up of 20 women from various situations who just wanted to work together to serve the community.

The group decided to pursue membership in the National Association of Junior Auxiliaries (NAJA) in 2006. This goal was realized in 2007 and WICCS became the Collierville Junior Auxiliary, an official chapter of the national organization.

Sixteen years later, the group continues to serve the community, but with a particular emphasis on children. Their programs include Angel Tree, Food for Kids/Child Welfare, Stuff the Bus, and the First Responders Feast. So far in 2023, the now 29-member Junior Auxiliary has served over 2600 hours and served 3000 pounds of food to families. They also award a $2500 Scholarship of Merit each year to a female student in her senior year at Collierville High School who has shown a commitment to education, leadership and service. This year’s recipient was Maya Collier. The application for the 2024 scholarship will open in January here.

The Junior Auxiliary has been and continues to be a female force for good in Collierville. They work hard, but they know how to have fun, too, and that’s what makes Scare on the Square one of the most popular kid events in Town all year. So choose your costume, and we’ll see you on the square on Friday, October 20, at 4:00 p.m.
