New waste disposal contract could save town thousands

Collierville will likely save more than $30,000 through the remainder of the current fiscal year by awarding a new bid to the town’s yard waste and mixed junk disposal provider.
The town’s Board of Mayor and Aldermen was scheduled to vote on the 24-month contract Monday night during its regular semimonthly meeting.
Fifty vendors were notified of bid availability but only one bid was received from Quad County Environmental Solutions for $5 a cubic yard for materials disposed at the landfill at 850 Wingo Road in Byhalia, Miss. The landfill located in Byhalia is C&D landfill that receives construction and demolition debris, which typically consists of roadwork material, excavated material, demolition waste, construction/renovation waste, and site clearance waste. C&D landfills do not receive hazardous waste or industrial solid waste.
Of the $595,566 budgeted for landfill services, $329,316 was set aside for household garbage disposal and $266,250 is budgeted for “yard waste and mixed junk.”
At $5 a cubic yard, Public Works Manager John Fox estimates that the town will save around $36,855 compared to the amount budgeted for the remainder of the fiscal year.
Collierville Public Services collects around 43,500 cubic yards of bagged grass, leaves and mixed junk annually.
