Local student heads up new Main Street project | Collierville Independent

Hillary Baker, a Collierville High School graduate and sophomore at the University of Memphis has been hired by Main Street Collierville to lead its new, grant funded “Downtown Youth Diplomat” project.

The goal of the project is to foster civic engagement, community pride, leadership, and dedication to historic preservation among Collierville youth. Youth participants will receive special training on the importance of preservation and the rich history of the Collierville Historic Town Square.

They will then serve the community by participating in the planning and implementation of events on the Town Square, and providing historic interpretation of important fixtures such as the Log Cabin Stage Coach Stop, the Railcars, the Depot, and the Battle of Collierville during Main Street Events.

“I’m very excited to join the team at Main Street Collierville,” said Baker. “I’ve always enjoyed local history and look forward to working with Collierville students to make our town square even better.”

Both the Tennessee Civil War National Heritage Area and the Collierville Community Fund have given financial support for the project, which will fund Hillary’s position.

“This project empowers youth to be actively involved in interpreting local history,” said Cheri Kilmurray, Main Street Collierville board member and recent appointee to the town’s Heritage Commission. “It will foster a value for historic landmarks, promote civic pride, and potentially spark a lifelong commitment to saving places that matter.”

“We are delighted to have Hillary on board to assist as volunteer coordinator for the Youth Diplomat project” stated Laura Todd, Executive Director . Main Street Collierville anticipates having the first recruits trained and ready for events on the Square this spring.

High school aged youth interested in serving as a Downtown Youth Diplomat are encouraged to contact Main Street Collierville at 853-1666 or [email protected].

Main Street Collierville is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization formed in 1991.

The mission of Main Street Collierville is to preserve and enhance the Town Square area as the Heart of Collierville, and provide for a successful business and residential environment.
