Local restaurant patrons, owner plan week of fundraising for friend | Collierville Independent

A group of local residents known as the Trophy Room Crew have come together to raise funds for a Collierville family in its time of need.

Lynn Mitchell, a frequent guest at Tony’s Trophy Room on Poplar Ave., was recently diagnosed with cancer. When word got out about his diagnosis, several of the establishment’s fellow patrons, staff and ownership decided to help.

A group of friends including Stephanie Lenn, Rachael Free, Cindy Casebolt-Fortenberry, Pamela Knowles, Angela Sarwar and restaurant owner Tony Sarwar came up with a plan to host a 7-day benefit to help pay for Mitchell’s medical expenses.

“We can’t cure the cancer,” said Sarwar, “but we can help lessen the financial burden. We want to help get him the best treatment available.”

When Mitchell, a father of three, recently went to the doctor to have growth on his neck removed, a four-hour surgery turned into 12 hours.

He was eventually diagnosed with Mucoepidermoid Carcinoma, a form of salivary gland cancer.

“It was a big tug on the heart when we found out,” said Sarwar. “He and his wife, Laura, are such great people and friends to the restaurant.”

The week of activities will kick off at 6:30 p.m. on Feb. 19 with BINGO, followed by a Texas Hold ‘Em Poker Tournament the next day. Wednesday will feature karaoke, with all tip money benefiting the Mitchell family.

“We want to raise as much money as we can,” Sarwar said. “This is life or death. They can afford this treatment, or this treatment.”

Thursday and Friday will feature concerts by Memphis band Thump Daddy and Groove Factor, as well as an auction.

Pending permit approval from the town, Sarwar has planned a Cornhole Tournament on Saturday.

The week will culminate with a prayer on Sunday.

“We’re going to all pray that we can get this licked,” said Sarwar. “We are inviting anyone and everyone to join together, silently or in voice to pray for Lynn Mitchell, his battle ahead of him, the journey he is about to take.”

Mitchell is scheduled to begin chemotherapy and radiation this month.

“We want to bring the community together to cheer for a great member of our town,” Sarwar added.
