Local coaching legend passes away | Collierville Independent

It is with great sadness that Lausanne Collegiate School announces the passing away of beloved former head football coach Ken Netherland at the age of 75.

Coach Netherland passed away on July 12.

Lausanne Athletic Director Troy Baker said, “Although he was a great football coach, his greatest strength was his genuine concern for students and his ability to inspire them to be better people. We owe a lot to Coach Netherland as a football program, as a school and as the city of Memphis for his impact on the thousands of boys that he coached and their families. His impact will never be forgotten.”

After close to 50 years of being called “coach” at four different Memphis area schools, Netherland finished his storied career with 368 wins, making him the winningest coach in the history of prep football in the state of Tennessee.

He began coaching at Hillcrest, then moved on to Germantown High School and St. George’s, finishing his legendary career last year at Lausanne.

Netherland was hired by Lausanne in 2011 to help lead the development of the football program and led the team onto the field for its first Varsity season in 2013.

Netherland graduated with a B.S. in Physical Education from the University of Mississippi and an M.Ed. from the University of Memphis. His accolades include Best of Preps Coach of the Year three times; Tennessee Athletic Coaches Association Coach of the Year; National High School Coach of the Year; District 7-5A Coach of the Year 1994-1999; Shelby County Coach of the Year in 2003; the first ever Head Coach for the Kentucky-Tennessee High School All-Star Game and Liberty Bowl High School All-Star Game; the first Netherland
