Gryphons to play in state championship game | Collierville Independent

St. George’s stormed to an early 14-6 lead Friday night and never looked back. The Gryphons defeated Harding 28-6 and earned a trip to the Div. 2-A state championship game on Dec. 3 in Cookeville.

Chase Hayden paced St. George’s with three touchdowns. The junior running back also had 137 yards on the ground and averaged nearly 6 yards a carry.

Hayden scored the first touchdown of the game early on a 38-yard dash.

Harding answered with a 39-yard pass from Zach Montgomery to Calvin Austin.

St. George’s would answer with junior quarterback Ben Glass punching in a redzone touchdown run from the one-yard line.

Neither team would score again before the half. Up 14-6 in the third quarter, the Gryphons scored on a 2-yard run courtesy of Hayden. He would add his third touchdown in the fourth quarter on another short run.

The Gryphons gained 240 rushing yards and 108 passing yards in the game. Hayden and Glass combined for 237 rushing yards. Glass also completed nearly 65 percent of his passes.

St. George’s defense only allowed 84 rushing yards and 150 passing yards.

The Gryphons (12-1) will play undefeated Northpoint Christian on Dec. 3 in the state championship game.

The Trojans beat University School of Jackson 38-14 Friday night in the semi-finals and have beaten their opponents by an average of 26 points this season.
