Playing Germantown is always tough…regardless of the records. The Collierville vs. Germantown game always brings the best out of the players on both sides.

Coach O’Neill had beaten his alma mater last year and the Red Devils weren’t going to let the Dragons leave Germantown without a fight. Germantown didn’t play like a 0-2 team, but the Dragons took care of business with a 14-7 victory for their first district win on Friday night.

The first half was scoreless with a back and forth defensive battle, however the Dragons flexed their muscles right before halftime. The Red Devils were driving late in the second quarter looking to score.

With the ball on the six-yard line and five seconds left on the clock, Germantown elected to go for the touchdown instead of kicking the field goal. As time ran out, linebacker Cameron Doyle stopped the Red Devils running back in his tracks to end the score threat.

Korderic Taylor came up big with a fumble recovery in the third quarter to stop the Red Devil drive. On the ensuing drive Collierville scored on a 55-yard run by Drew Van de Vuurst (Dillon Scott’s PAT was good) for a 7-0 lead to end the third quarter.

Germantown answered on the next possession with a 12-play, 74-yard touchdown drive to even the score 7-7. Mid-way in the fourth quarter, the Red Devils were driving deep into Collierville territory. With fourth-and-one on the 12-yard line, again the Red Devils elected to go for the touchdown. Linebacker Mitch Jensen come up big for the defense with a hard hitting tackle in the backfield to stop the scoring threat.

With 1:35 left in the game, Collierville’s special teams came up big with the fumble recovery by Tyler Garvey off a Dragon’s punt which gave Collierville new life with the ball on the Germantown 40-yard line.

With 24 seconds left in the game, Ed Pomphrett scored an 11-yard touchdown run (Scott’s PAT was good) for a 14-7 lead. Pomphrett scored the winning touchdown, but the Dragons offensive line had a hand in it as well.

Pomphrett was stopped at the four-yard line (but still running hard) and the linemen headed by Josh Christian and Hunter Hill pushed the pile the next four yards needed for the Dragons score.

Austin Hall’s last second interception sealed the victory for the Dragons.

Final Score: Collierville 14, Germantown 7

When asked about team play, O’Neill stated, “I’m really glad for the win at Germantown and our first district win. There’s a lot of things on different levels that we have to improve on. Really proud of our defense, they were out there most of the game with really good stops in the second half.”

The Dragons travel to Cordova Friday for the non-district Class AAA challenge. Collierville’s next game will be at Cordova on Sept. 12 at 7 p.m.
