CPD raises money for St. Jude

In the midst of “cancel culture,” there are still important events where the show must go on. When the Collierville Police Department signed up as a team to participate in the St. Jude Walk/Run earlier this year, they knew a traditional 5K race would be unlikely in the midst of a pandemic.

Regardless, fundraising to help cure childhood cancer is important enough, whether there was a race or not.Late in the summer, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital decided to host the walk/run as a virtual event.

With that announcement, Collierville Police decided to host a run for the CPD Team comprised of 38 police officers, friends, and family. Participants met at WC Johnson Park, the morning of September 26, masked up, spaced out, and ready to race.

Special Citizen Volunteers and Police Explorers helped with traffic control and course guidance.

“We appreciate everyone coming out today in support of the kids at St. Jude,” said Chief Dale Lane during a pre-race pep talk. “Last I checked, our total was over $7,500. I wasn’t sure how much money we’d end up raising when we first got started, but this is outstanding.”Lane joined the team as they ran or walked the 3.1 miles in and around WC Johnson Park.

The overall winner for the CPD event was Neal Rowlett, son of Capt. Ken Rowlett, with a finish time of 23:30.15.
