Collierville’s production of Les Misérables in rehearsals | Collierville Independent

The Collierville High School Draco Playhouse will present the “global stage sensation” Les Misérables in April.

Based on the famous French novel by Victor Hugo, Les Misérables is regarded as the ultimate story of redemption. Featuring a score by legendary composer Claude-Michel Schönberg, Les Misérables includes many musical theatre standards like: “I Dreamed a Dream,” “Do You Hear the People Sing?,” and “Bring Him Home.”

The Draco Playhouse production is directed by Keith Salter. Emily Taylor is the choral director. Strings teacher Sherry Fuller will conduct the 25 instrument student orchestra.

Now widely known for the 2012 movie adaptation starring Hugh Jackman and Russell Crowe, the musical has shattered box office records around the world for more than 25 years.

Set against the bleak backdrop of 18th century France, as well as the infamously failed June Rebellion, Les Misérables tells the story of ex-convict Jean Valjean and his struggle to free himself from his past, only to be constantly on the run from the law-abiding but good hearted Inspector Javert. Valjean agrees to take care of factory worker Fantine’s daughter, Cosette, and his life finally changes for the better.

Since the musical takes place over a span of more than 30 years and is completely sung-through, it is considered an enormous feat to produce.

When asked about the challenges that a production of this caliber can bring about, choreographer Hannah Peeples said, ”Although there are not many numbers that require intense choreography, the show is constantly moving from song to song, which requires immense amounts of well thought out musical staging, as well as tremendous vocal ability.”

“I can say for certain that our cast and creative team are well- equipped to take on this task,” she said.

In this Draco Playhouse production, Valjean is portrayed by senior Mark Elich, and Javert by junior Jonathan Gibson. Other performers include Ellie Perry as Fantine, Madison Pruitt as Cosette, Luke Howard as Marius, Hannah Peeples as Eponine, Jake McCutcheon as Enjolras, and Ty Lenderman and Anne Saunders as the Thenardiers.
