Collierville’s jobless rate continues to drop

Collierville’s unemployment rate has seen a sizable reduction since 2020. 

The current rate of 2.9 percent is down from 5.3 percent a year ago. 

Collierville’s estimated labor force sits at 26,350, with slightly more than 765 workers filing for unemployment in May, according to the Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development. 

Shelby County’s rate of 6.8 percent remains among the highest in the state.

At 7.1 percent, only Perry County has a higher rate among the state’s 95 counties. 

Of Tennessee municipalities with a population of 25,000 or higher, Brentwood (2.6 percent), Franklin (2.8 percent), Collierville and Germantown (2.9 percent) have the lowest jobless rates in the state.

The majority of counties recorded unemployment rates below 5 percent in May 2021.Forty counties experienced a drop in unemployment during May, while rates remained the same in 18 counties. Thirty-seven counties did see some increase in unemployment for the month.

Tennessee’s largest cities, Nashville (4.3 percent) and Memphis (8.1 percent), continue to see a marked difference in jobless rates.
