Collierville native helps lead team to College World Series title

Jack Dougherty pitching

Staff Reports

Collierville’s Jack Dougherty helped lead the University of Mississippi (Ole Miss) baseball team to the first Men’s College World Series in school history on Sunday against the University of Oklahoma. Ole Miss (42-23) became the eighth national champion since 2009 to come out of the SEC.

Dougherty, a 6-foot-4 right handed pitcher, was near perfection in Saturday night’s game in Omaha as he delivered for Ole Miss in a crucial College World Series start that put the Rebels one win away from the championship. He also drew comparisons to Max Scherzer while throwing a perfect game through five innings. He was dominant with a fastball-slider combination that had the Oklahoma Sooners hitters uncomfortable in the box. The former Dragon ace tied a career-high with the five innings pitched before unraveling in the sixth inning as he surrendered three straight hits and a walk before head coach Mike Bianco went to the bullpen.
