Collierville Literacy Council teams up with Target to host Pop-up Storytime at Town Square Park

Inspiring children to love reading is key to their future success, and the Collierville Literacy Council has partnered with Target Collierville for a free public event designed to encourage area kids to read for pleasure.

The first Pop-up Storytime to celebrate World Book Day will be held from 10 a.m. to noon on April 23 at the Town of Collierville’s Town Square Park. In case of rain, the event will move to the Suggs Park Pavilion in Collierville.

Participants are encouraged to grab a blanket or chair and come listen to volunteers from Target Collierville and the Literacy Council read aloud from popular children’s books. Target staff will also be giving away books to children in the audience.

Penny Aronson, Collierville Literacy Council Executive Director, said partnerships like the one with Target Collierville are an excellent opportunity to serve more families and fulfill the CLC’s mission of enhancing literacy in our community.

“Experts say reading for pleasure plays a major role in a child’s success – even more than their family circumstances, socioeconomic status or educational background,” Aronson said. “Kids have a lot of options for entertainment nowadays, and it’s up to all of us adults to help them develop a lifelong love of reading. We’re thrilled to find partners like Target Collierville who understand this and are willing to give of their time to reach out to young people.”

Aronson said the Pop-up Storytime is a great way to celebrate World Book Day, which was created by UNESCO in 1995 to change lives through a love of books and shared reading and to offer every child the opportunity to have a book of their own.

It is held every year on April 23, the date on which several famous authors including William Shakespeare and Miguel de Cervantes passed away. It is recognized in over 100 countries.
