Board to name interim alderman on Monday

Town officials will announce next Monday an interim successor to fill Tom Allen’s vacated position on the Board of Mayor and Aldermen.

A vacancy was declared by the board last month after Allen passed away on July 21.

According to the Town Charter, the board must name a person to fill Allen’s former position until a new Alderman is named in the Nov. 3 election.

“Within 30 days after a vacancy occurs in the office of Alderman,” the Charter states, “the board shall appoint to such office a citizen, who would be eligible thereto, to serve for the remainder of the unexpired term.”

The appointee will serve until the November election.

Any member of the board can nominate a candidate. A simple majority vote is required.

Allen was diagnosed with Stage IV pancreatic cancer earlier this summer and announced his plans to resign from post as Pos. 4 Alderman.

Allen was 84 years old and served the town for 14 years.

Justin Mitchell served as Pos. 4 Aldermen before Allen was elected.
